In 2015 I had the privilege of moving to Nunavik for work. Prior to relocating, I had little to no knowledge of the culture and population.
As I prepared myself with formal training personal research, I became more aware of just how much of an impact Nunavik and Indigenous People had on Quebec and Canadian history. For a land that made up one third of Quebec, I was embarrassed that I had little to no knowledge about the culture and population.
I quickly became humbled as I packed my belongings and took the 2.5-hour plane ride to Northern Quebec. The year that I lived in Nunavik was the most enriching and valuable year filled with an abundance of personal and professional growth. In addition, it allowed me to gain awareness that the things we consider “luxurious” are not so practical or essential on a daily basis.
The Indigenous people have a deep connection to the land, and this was an eye-opening experience. There is a wealth of knowledge in learning about the land we live on and the treasures that it provides us with.
As we celebrate National Indigenous Day on June 21st, let us take the time to recognize and celebrate the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis, that of the Indigenous people! Let us also take a moment to embrace and be thankful for all that we have and all that we have learned during the last year, that has proven to be quite challenging!
